INDUSTRY MISSILE TO VBA
Updated: Sep 29, 2022
SPHERES OF INFLUENCE & POWER
On 10 June 2022, the CEO of the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors put out a press
release saying that they had lost confidence in the VBA as the regulator for the building
The accusations the AIBS made are highly derogative, broad-reaching, and detailed. The
table below is a precis of the dot points of complaints made against the VBA (paraphrased as best we can) and the BCA’s position on the issues raised.
It is a very public and formal set of severe accusations of not just the VBA and its leadership but also its core function and the integrity of its position as the regulator.
The table below tries to accurately precise the dot points.
Précised: AIBS claim the VBA is
The BCA response
Unduly punitive & harsh historical claims
Failure to call for advice from experts
The penalties applied are disproportionate to conduct & are a waste of resources & do not benefit consumers.
Failing to function as VBA is the RBS
Fails to respond
Some practitioners are not qualified for unlimited surveyor
Combustible cladding, VBA plays ping pong with issue
Failed to act on orphaned permits by the thousands
Industry alerts are harmful to surveyors.
The consumer and the broader community demand an official detailed point-by-point response to these allegations, not just dismissive one-liners. We have written to the VBA, Ms Sue Eddy & the Minister for (Building) & Planning, Ms Lizzie Blandthorn, for an urgent, complete, and frank explanation of these accusations. We will upload their responses next to this BLOG when and if they arrive.
See below a copy of our letter.
